Being
successful in life goes far beyond how well an individual reads, writes, or does
mathematics. It is vital for students to also possess skills which allow them
to communicate and work effectively with people of varying backgrounds and beliefs.
Graduates must possess characteristics such as Responsibility, Respect, and Optimism.
Today,
many factors threaten to interfere with students' opportunities to learn and practice
good character. The breakdown of family units and the influence of peers and the
media put tremendous pressures on today's adolescents. Since children
spend a large part of their day in school, educators play an important role in
teaching children character. Teachers and other school staff have many opportunities
to promote positive character in students. |

Central School District recognizes the importance of teaching and reinforcing
positive character. We have envisioned a community which embraces common guiding
principles and fosters a school environment that promotes the development of solid
character. Working together with parents, community members, and business leaders
we have identified and defined three Key Guiding Principles: Responsibility People
of character in the Albion Community take RESPONSIBILITY for their behavior
and show they can be trusted by others. They are careful to think things through
before making choices and they are honest with themselves and others. Respect People
of character in the Albion Community show RESPECT to others at home, at
school, and in their personal lives. They show compassion, are helpful, and strive
to resolve differences and conflicts by working toward common needs and goals. Optimism People
of character in the Albion Community take an OPTIMISTIC and hopeful view
of themselves and others. They have a positive attitude and are eager to learn.
They show initiative and perseverance in working to accomplish important goals
and activities. Each
school building emphasizes the Guiding Principles through projects, activities,
and assemblies. Some of the many activities used to promote positive character
include: -
"Peace" Week at the Elementary, Middle and High Schools
- Development
of districtwide "Eagle Way" program teaching students what it looks
like to have good character
- Leadership
group formed at high school to develop and implement character programs for students
-
Optimism Day at the elementary school
- Integrated

- "Caught

Character
education in Albion goes beyond such short-term approaches. Staff development
has encouraged our educators to use the "teachable moment." By integrating character
education into the existing curricula and by using naturally occurring events
to teach character lessons, staff can teach students how the guiding principles
apply to life situations. Additionally, our staff model the guiding principles
in their daily interactions with each other and with students. |
