Middle school students learn kayaking rules during a Super Saturday class. Albion
offers a number of extended day and year learning programs for students throughout
the grades that are both remedial and enrichment in nature. Activities range from
before school for students in grades 3-5, to after school academic and enrichment
programs in the middle school, to fifth block and regents review classes in the
high school. Believing
that a strong foundation in reading is a key to success, a before and after school
reading program has been instituted for students who have performed below the
district's established benchmarks at each of the grade levels. Students in grades
three, four and five attend an early morning reading/writing program. Students
also participate in a before school math program. Students
in the middle school can stay after school several days a week and participate
in reading, math, science, or Spanish clubs and review classes. Staff members
stay and help students work on or finish their homework, offering assistance as
needed. Saturday enrichment programs are also available to middle school students
and include math labs, science, physical fitness and more. These programs are
funded with a NYS grant called "21st Century Community Learning Centers." In
the high school, a number of opportunities are available to help students outside
the regular school day. Students who are retained at a grade are assigned to a
mandatory learning lab. At the learning lab, study skills and test taking techniques,
organization and time management skills, communication skills, and monitoring
homework assignments and projects is the focus. These students also participate
in a fifth block course where teachers work intensively with students to assist
them in improving their grades. Strides are made to keep in close contact with
parents via phone or home visits to inform them of their child's academic progress.
Students who may be failing a course will be required to stay for extra help with
their course teacher until the teacher indicates that the student is academically
performing at a satisfactory level in the course. Prior
to the New York State Regents exam, review classes are held by the classroom teachers
for students who wish to review the course material or reinforce previous learning.
Students who wish to retake regents exams, for either a passing grade or to achieve
at a higher level, can participate in review sessions. Open
computer lab time is available two days a week at the high school level for students
to take advantage of and help them finish projects, research papers and homework. |
