Albion
Central has a a group of four-year-olds gracing its hallways during the school
year. Each
spring, children are selected by lottery from a pool of applicants to enroll in
the district's two sections of the pre-kindergarten program. Two teachers teach
a morning session and an afternoon session. A total of 80 children attend PreK. "The
research is abundant and convincing that early childhood education positively
impacts student achievement," said Superintendent Grabowski. "We, in Albion, are
fortunate to be able to provide this service to our families." The
class meets Monday through Friday for two and a half hours each day either in
the morning (9 - 11:30 am) or afternoon (1 - 3:30 pm). The classes follow the
regular school calendar. Albion's
program is totally funded through the NYS Universal Pre-Kindergarten grant. Orleans
County Community Action's Head Start program is the community partner agency. The
program provides both a social and academic element to learning. Children participate
in learning activities through art, song, and circle time. They work on sharing
and acquiring important social skills like listening, respect for each other and
responsibility. Contact
the district office at 589-2050 for more information regarding the Universal Pre-Kindergarten
program. |
