Art Course Descriptions

ART120
STUDIO ART
1 CREDIT
This course offers a semester long introduction to the nature, function and techniques of the visual arts in the present and in the past. Studio Art is a fundamental course introducing the elements and principles of art and design. This course includes work in a variety of media such as drawing, painting and art appreciation. In addition to the actual creative process, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the aesthetic judgments and be able to apply them to works of art.

APCART
AP STUDIO ART
2 CREDITS (40 weeks)
The AP Studio Art Portfolio course is designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art and wish to develop mastery in the concept, composition and execution of their ideas. AP Studio Art is not based on a written exam; instead, students submit portfolios or evaluations at the end of the school year. In building the portfolio, students experience a variety of concepts, techniques and approaches designed to help them demonstrate their abilities as well as their versatility with techniques, problem solving and ideation. Students also develop a body of work for the concentration section of the portfolio that investigates an idea of personal interest to them. It is recommended that students first take Studio Art, Drawing and Painting prior to AP Studio Art.

ART 220
DRAWING
1 CREDIT
This course will be an exploration of the various materials and techniques associated with drawing. Students will study and experiment with a variety of papers where they will react to the various pencil and eraser techniques being taught. A wide range of subject matter will be explored such as still life, landscapes, figures, and portraits. Emphasis will be placed on drawing from direct observation.

ART 240
DRAWING 2
1 CREDIT
Building on basic drawing skills, this course explores various media, techniques, and compositional elements with special emphasis on portrait and life drawing. A working sketchbook is expected, as well as a strong focus on the elements and principals of art. Drawing I should be successfully completed first.

ART 320
PAINTING
1 CREDIT
Students will explore a variety of painting media and techniques. Also incorporated will be a study of various artists and their styles. Media will include: watercolor, tempera, acrylic and ink, on various papers and canvas.

ART 340
PAINTING 2
1 CREDIT
Students who have mastered basic painting skills undertake sustained projects including portrait and landscape work. Lectures and handouts deepen students' appreciation of representational traditions. Advanced techniques, materials, and compositional issues are also investigated. An independent project in the final weeks will be undertaken. Painting I should be successfully completed first.

ART 720
2 DIMENSIONAL CONCEPTS
1 CREDIT
This is an advanced course for a student that has successfully completed Studio in Art. This course will help students gain a better understanding of the design process and utilization of compositional elements and principles in 2 dimensional works of art. (WILL BE OFFERED IN THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR)

ART 721
PHOTOGRAPHY
1 CREDIT
This is a survey course in the basic concepts of black and white photography. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of camera operation, visual composition, the developing process and darkroom use. The emphasis, first and foremost, will be placed on learning photography as a medium for creative expression. Technical procedures taught in the course will be vehicles for creating artistic, well-composed photographs. This course is extremely difficult and is recommended for only the most motivated students with the ability to work independently. Students must provide a 35mm SLR Camera and a 3" three-ring binder for the course. (Juniors and Seniors only) (WILL BE OFFERED IN THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR)

ART 723
3D CONCEPTS
1 CREDIT
This course will explore three-dimensional forms and concepts. Along with studying historical 3D forms, students will also design and create work through: carving, modeling, building and/or assembling. Other topics to be covered include: abstract vs. realistic, tools and techniques, elements and principles of design, material selection, measuring and use of scale, career and entrepreneurial prospects. Students may be asked to bring in found objects for some projects. This course is available as a credit for art, technology or MST.

ART 724
3D CONCEPTS: ADVANCED
1 CREDIT
This is an advanced level course for Juniors or Seniors that have completed 3D Concepts, or have instructor approval. This course is a continued exploration of topics covered in 3D Concepts and will focus on: honing skills learned previously, more advanced projects, and more in-depth study of conceptual art and design. Students may be asked to bring in found objects for some projects. This course is available as a credit for art, technology or MST.

HCS321
HOUSING AND ENVIRONMENT
1/2 CREDIT
This course is designed to familiarize students with housing design and the personal and environmental factors which must be considered when making housing designs. Students will learn about exterior and interior design and how to care for the home. Careers related to housing, household management and interior design will be explored. (May be used as an Art Credit)

TCH220
ARCHITECTURE AND STRUCTURES
1 CREDIT
This course deals with the planning, drawing, and construction of residential structures. The following topics will be covered: culture and history, tools and techniques, lettering, aesthetics, site/personnel planning, area/room planning, floor plans and interior design, dimensions, sections/framing, exterior elevations and construction techniques, doors and windows, perspective drawings and careers. This course is available as a technology or art credit.

TCH320
CAD I
1 CREDIT (3 GCC Credits)
This course is designed to encourage visual problem-solving using a common graphic language to describe forms in the man-made environment. To enable students to analyze, creatively design and critically evaluate these objects, the course requires research for historical precedents, cultural references and future visions. This course will also fulfill the art/music requirement. By registering with GCC, students who achieve a 70 or higher in the course can receive three college credits.
