FACT:
The leading cause of death for people 15 - 24
years old is traffic accidents.
FACT:
The majority
of automobile accidents occur on weekends and between the hours of 9:00 pm and
6:00 am.
FACT:
Teenagers
driving at night with passengers are 4 - 5 times more likely to crash than teenagers
driving alone during the day.
These
facts and others were shared with students during a driver safety service learning
program presented by high school health class students in Mrs. Plummer's class.
The project was aimed at educating fellow students about the dangers of driving
and what they can do to be safe on the road. Students traveled to several different
student run stations and one manned by the New York State Police.
New
York State Troopers Timothy Waild (Lockport) and Ryan Dulkiewicz (Batavia) demonstrated
the roll-over vehicle to students. They simulated what happens to passengers (with
and without seat belts) when their vehicle rolls over in an accident.
Other
driver safety stations:
Carnations
were placed on each student vehicle in the parking lot. A note was attached with
teen driver statistics and a reminder to students that said: "Remember to
drive safely this prom season and summer, we want you around!" A special
notation was made that the program was in memory of two Albion grads who recently
died in car accidents.
