Health is required for all students. It is recommended
that it be taken in either the junior or senior year. Seniors
are given first priority for available spaces. Health
Education provides students the opportunity to: (1) Comprehend
concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention, (2)
Access valid health info, (3) Practice health enhancing behaviors
to reduce health risks, (4) Analyze the influence of culture,
media, and technology on health, (5) Use interpersonal communication
skills, (6) Use goal setting and decision-making, (7) Advocate
for personal, family and community health. Areas of emphasis are
nutrition, tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Disease, family
life education, human sexuality, as well as mental health and
stress are covered. A number of projects, essays, tests and quizzes
are required for successful completion.

FIT FOR LIFE
1/2 CREDIT
The goal of this course is to provide an in-depth study of human
nutrition, emphasizing its relationship to health and fitness.
In this course the student will relate the concepts of nutrition,
diet, and exercise to good health. The content of this course
will examine the role of nutrients in the body, diet-related conditions,
special diets, diet analysis, lifetime fitness and the effects
of food preparation techniques on diet.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
1/2 CREDIT
Physical education will develop advanced skills and strategies
for team sports, individual/dual sports, and lifetime activities.
Students will have an opportunity to select (based on seniority)
from the following units: flag football, soccer, softball, basketball,
volleyball, speedball, ultimate Frisbee, biking, ropes course,
golf, bowling, kayaking, tennis, self-defense, wrestling, aerobics,
snow-shoeing, and "picnic" games. The following units
are required: broomball, team handball, cooperative games, pickle-ball,
racquetball, badminton, table tennis, archery, orienteering, and
dance. Emphasis will be on improving the fitness level and knowledge
of each student by having him/her attend the community fitness
center, participate in sport
play, physical fitness testing, and daily physical conditioning.
