INTRODUCTION TO OCCUPATIONS
1 CREDIT
This is a one (1) unit, 20 week course designed to meet the mandated
requirements for Occupations Education majors. The course is divided
into two ten (10) week modules as follows:
CAREER/WORKING CITIZEN introduces students to the realities of the
working world, providing them with information and experience which
will help them make future decisions concerning work.
PERSONAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT will teach students specific knowledge
in areas that need management by all workers. Management and decision-making
skills are used to solve appropriate problems and students are guided
to develop coping and critical thinking skills in order to become
more responsible workers and citizens.
Grades will be based on class work, homework, quizzes and other
assignments. A notebook is required, plus any extra materials needed
during the course of the year. The student is required to take the
NYS exam in January/June for the two required modules; Working Citizen
and Personal Resource Management.

WORKPLACE INTERNSHIP
1 CREDIT
This 20 week course provides seniors with the opportunity to participate
in a hands-on work experience in their area of career interest.
The course objective is to prepare students with the skills and
knowledge necessary for success in the workplace while also developing
a broader awareness of the educational demands required for employment.
Students attend class two days a week and their internship three
days a week. The class focuses on developing team building strategies,
refining interpersonal and communication skills as well as teaching
problem solving and critical thinking skills. Methods of assessment
include three-four research projects/oral presentations, independent
reading assignments (news articles to be read and summarized), tests,
quizzes, midterm and final evaluations completed by the internship
supervisor, guest speaker evaluations and a portfolio to be completed
throughout the semester.
