A letter from the School Board President
Dear Community Member:
I’m pleased to present the proposed 2020-2021 school year budget on behalf of the Albion Board of Education. We sought to prepare a budget that would not only meet the needs of our students and school community, but also allow for unexpected expenses and changes ahead without imposing undue burden on you, our taxpayers.
While this year’s budget reflects a 3.62% increase of $1,285,522 from last year, the proposed tax rate will not increase. We maintained our current tax rate by leveraging State Aid, appropriating fund balance and taking advantage of reserves if necessary. It’s a testament to our District’s history of financial stability and fiscal responsibility and it continues to serve us well during these trying times.
A portion of the increase in proposed budget is attributable to: the addition of a “COVID Response Fund”, to cover instructional expenses related to a shortened academic year as well as other health and safety mandates; an upgrade to our facilities to improve school safety which will place additional exterior doors on our buildings, an effort funded by a grant which requires us to match the aid our District is given; the search and placement of a new District Superintendent, and lastly, normal increases to tuition and employee benefits due, in part, to an influx of students moving to the District.
The Board of Education asks you to select three individuals to fill open seats on the board. We are lucky to have seven community members this year who are willing to take on this role. Additionally, you are asked to vote for an expenditure from our Bus Reserve Fund to purchase a maximum of five new school buses. While these funds have already been set aside thanks to prior approval of voters, any expenditures from the fund must be authorized by taxpayers in advance.
While it will look a little different this year with no in-person attendance, our District Budget Hearing will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 28, 2020. The presentation may be viewed live or replayed via the link on this page. We encourage you to join us for this presentation and the introduction of your BOE candidates.
The Board of Education, together with our Administration and staff remain committed to our students, our community and our District. Our goal to “ensure all students have an equal opportunity to reach their full potential and achieve future success” drives what we do, every day. We look forward to a bright future here at Albion, with increased community involvement and collaboration. Despite the challenges we are currently facing, we have many exciting things on the horizon. The last couple of months have reminded me once again of what a wonderful community we live in. Watching people band together to help and support each other makes me proud to be an Albion Purple Eagle and raise my family here. I trust that the lessons we learn during this pandemic will strengthen us as individuals and as a community, and continue to make us better together.
Please remember that hand delivered ballots are due in the District Office no later than 5:00 p.m. on June 9, 2020. Mailed ballots must be received no later than June 16th at 5pm to be counted. We appreciate your past support. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns. Thank you!
Kathy Harling, Board of Education President
