Volcanos Erupt in Science Club

Volcanos Erupt in Science Club

Students get excited as their volcano erupts!

Students in the after-school science club had a very good time this past week making volcanic eruptions!

They had to follow directions very carefully if they wanted their volcano to erupt correctly.

1/2 cup water
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup dish detergent
Red or orange food color
2 Tbsp. baking soda

*Place first four ingredients in a bottle (students used an empty soda bottle).  When you are ready, add the baking soda, sit back and watch it erupt. (We suggest you place it on a tray or in a sink to collect the overflow).

During the first session, students were introduced to the Scientific Method.  For every experiment, they have to develop an hypothesis before they perform their experiment, log the results and develop a conclusion.

Their first experiment was to see how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie-Pop.  Most students counted between 500-600 licks!

The science club meets twice a week after school for three weeks.

Advisors are Mrs. Burrell and Mrs. Schepis.

After school programs are funded with Community Schools Grant funds.
