Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want to inform you of a new statewide law, recently enacted by New York State, that impacts students’ use of smartphones and other personal internet-enabled devices during the school day.
Beginning this September, a “Bell-to-Bell” Internet-Enabled Device Ban will be in effect across all New York State schools. This means students will not be allowed to use smartphones, smartwatches, or any other personal electronic devices with internet access on school grounds from the first bell to the last bell of each school day.
What This Means for Students:
· Devices must be turned off and securely stored—either in student lockers or in a designated secure area within the main office—during all parts of the school day. This includes instructional and non-instructional time, such as homeroom, lunch, recess, study halls, and during passing periods.
· No communication or media use will be allowed, including texting, social media, phone calls, recordings, or music streaming.
· Exceptions may be made for documented medical needs or for specific educational purposes as approved by school staff.
Why This Change?
The intent of this new law is to improve student focus, engagement, mental wellness, and academic achievement. By minimizing distractions throughout the day, we aim to create a learning environment where all students can thrive.
Supporting the Transition:
To help families and students prepare for this change:
· Back-to-School Night presentations at each school building will provide detailed information and a chance to ask questions before the start of the school year. Back-to-School Night for all three buildings will be on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
· Students will receive ongoing reminders and support throughout the year to reinforce expectations and procedures.
· Our staff will consistently and fairly enforce the policy across all school settings.
· The Albion Central School District Code of Conduct will be updated to reflect and comply with this new legislation.
We understand that this shift may require an adjustment, and we truly appreciate your support in helping reinforce these expectations at home. Our shared efforts will go a long way toward maintaining a safe, respectful, and distraction-free environment where every student can succeed.
As we receive additional guidance or updates, we will keep you informed through ParentSquare, our district website, and our social media platforms.
Thank you for your partnership and continued support.
Sincerely,
Mickey Edwards
